After being inhabited for over 10,000 years by the Chumash Indians, the Spanish arrived in the late 18th century, but left the area largely unsettled. In the 1860's Italian settlers arrived in Montecito, finding an area reminiscent of their homes in Italy, they built farms and gardens similar to those which they had left behind. Around the end of the 19th century, rich tourists from the eastern United States began to buy land in the area: it was close to Santa Barbara, beautiful, secluded, boasted perfect weather, had several hot springs and, at the time, land was cheap.

Montecito has kept that early character and is comprised of exclusive estates and second homes. Nestled in approximately 8 square miles, Montecito’s breathtaking scenery and relaxed lifestyle is home to an extensive list of celebrities. With a population of approximately 10,000, Montecito is among the wealthiest communities in the United States. Montecito property values average $1.75 million to $5.5 million with some souring significantly higher. Many homes have ocean or mountain views and the tree lined streets are part of the mature natural foliage which helps to shelter most homes from public view. It is situated east of and directly adjacent to the city of Santa Barbara.
Don’t let it’s size fool you, Montecito offers pristine beaches, unique shops, art galleries and wonderful restaurants within walking distance. Need more to do, Santa Barbara is a 5 minute drive and you are sure to find what you are looking for there.
